Opening Ceremony of the Smart Learning Facility at Uva Wellassa University

The Smart Learning Facility established through the support of the Erasmus+ SUCCESSFUL Project (CBHE Strand 1), with self-financing contributed by Uva Wellassa University (UWU), demonstrating the university’s strong commitment to advancing innovative learning was officially declared open on 12th August 2025 at the First Floor, Block E, UWU with the participation of distinguished academics and administrative staff. This milestone event marked the official launch of a modern learning environment designed to foster interactive, technology-driven education at UWU. This state-of-the-art facility created by converting two existing laboratories, is designed to enhance interactive and technology-driven learning. This facility is equipped with a seating capacity of 120, a smart board, a digital kiosk, a built-in computer system, two laptops, a modern sound system, and other essentials, providing an advanced learning environment for both staff and students.

The ceremony commenced with the welcoming of the Chief Guest, Snr. Prof. K.B. Wijesekara, the Vice Chancellor of UWU, followed by the ceremonial opening of the Smart Learning Facility. Prof. E.D.N.S. Abeyrathne then delivered the Welcome Address, setting the tone for the event, while Prof. H.M.S.K. Herath, Dean of the Faculty of Animal Science and Export Agriculture, emphasized the significance of the initiative for the faculty and the wider university community. This was followed by a presentation from Prof. D.K.D.D. Jayasena, who outlined the project outcomes and introduced the newly developed Climate Education Course, one of the major achievements of the SUCCESSFUL Project. The Chief Guest, Snr. Prof. K.B. Wijesekara, in his address highlighted the importance of integrating smart learning technologies into modern higher education. Dr. M.K.S.L.D. Amarathunga, Head of the Department of Export Agriculture, also addressed the gathering, appreciating the collaborative efforts behind the project. The session concluded with the Vote of Thanks delivered by Prof. P.E. Kaliyadasa, Project Coordinator of the SUCCESSFUL Project, who acknowledged the support of Erasmus+ and the dedication of the UWU community. Following the speeches, participants engaged in an observation tour of the facility, experiencing firsthand the modern teaching and learning resources. Further to this facility existing smart classroom in the faculty with less facilities was equipped with new seating arrangement for another 86 students to provide more students with modern learning environment at UWU.

This Smart Learning Facility marks a milestone in UWU’s journey towards innovative, technology-driven education, enabling enriched teaching and learning experiences while fostering international collaboration in higher education.
